Rhetorical Analysis Outline on Chaim Weizmann Speech

My Rhetorical Analysis Outline on

Chaim Weizmann’s Speech

Purpose: To enforce power and show that he’s here for the Jewish people in the process of reclaiming Jerusalem

Audience: The Jewish Zionist; Palestinian Muslims and Arabs; the UN

Context: First he was appointed of the Zionist Commission in 1918 by the British. He then became the president of the World Zionist Organization until 1946. Eventually he became the first president of Israel in February of 1949 with the help of having friends in high places in America and Britain. However, in 1948 Jerusalem was under the control of the UN.

Claims: Jerusalem rightfully belongs to the Jewish; the Jewish should come together in helping to take their land back

Warrants: The Jewish fought and protected Jerusalem in the past; it was their land before the Palestinian Arabs came along (faulty warrants weakens argument a lot)

Appeals: Pathos-creating a sense that a part of Palestine, specifically Jerusalem, belongs to the Jewish people; creating a sense of patriotism for their old land

Technique:

·         Use of rhetorical questions. The purpose and use for this is to show that he has knowledge of what’s happening in Palestine at the time. To show that he knows the struggle the Jewish people are going through. To explain that no one has their back, except him and he’s going to get Israel recognized as a country. “Did they lift a finger…for months on end?”

·         Diction: “quintessence”: That Jerusalem is everything to the Jewish people. “…lodestar in all our wanderings”: Guiding light in life; showed them the way. “…eternal mother…”: Jerusalem is nurturing to them, taken care of them, taught the Jewish people their morals, where they emerged. “…with your blood and your sacrifice”: very pathos filled, make people want rally together to reclaim Jerusalem, makes people want to trust him because he knows the people’s hardships

·         Metaphors: “Jerusalem is the eternal mother of the Jewish people…”

Jargon: “…far-flung Diaspora…”=Jews that are spread out and not living in Israel

Tone:  In the beginning very sorrowful and mournful about the lost, gradually becomes more accusing, nostalgic, and angry towards the Arabs and the British for not supporting them the way they wanted them to

General Evaluation: Very weak argument because he had a faulty warrants and very little to no evidence. The argument was full of pathos very little to no logos at all. I wish he had more direct evidence; the argument would’ve been more solid. Filled with a lot of rhetorical questions, could have had a more of a variety of techniques to make the argument stronger. His argument was only good at getting the emotions he wanted out of the audience he was speaking to. One thing I do want to point out though is that this speech was delivered in a different language. Some words could have been lost in translation because some words or phrases don’t have a translation. Also the translator could have bias causing the speaker to appear differently than originally intended.

Joseph Goebbels and Winston Churchill

You would expect Joseph Goebbels and Winston Churchill to be totally opposite since one man was for Nazi Germany and the other was opposing them. However, when it comes to the idea of gaining and retaining power they aren’t that different at all. Both of them knew with the war going that retaining power is crucial if you want to win.

Even though the men took very different approaches to retain power and gain support, their strategies had the same effect. Churchill had built his listeners up with strategies on what he was going to do and the circumstances of the war. He did this so the people he was speaking to could trust him. Another thing he did was being honest, and during a war of this nature, people value honesty because then they feel that this man is truthful and could lead them to victory. Churchill reeled the people in to get his support. Goebbels also reeled the people in; however, it was to make them go along with his demands at the end of his speech. He jumps right in by calling Bolshevism evil and how Jewry is the work of the devil. He follows with explaining that they need to fight this evil and try and save Europe. He then starts to quickly gain support and cheers from his “followers.”
They also know that this concept of adding the “devil” into the speeches will make the crowd go wild. The “devil” was always associated with evil, torture, and terror, even if you aren’t religious. And this is why both men either implied about the devil or explicitly say it. They did this because it’s a trigger. When a person hears words like monster, devil, and torturer pertaining to the people that they’re fighting, they’re going to want to fight them back to try and restore “goodness” and “peace.” Both of the men used this strategy because they knew it would have that effect on the people. However, Goebbels used this strategy a lot, which he knew he had to because he knew the crazy things that Hitler and him were doing. He made it seem like Jewry was a contagious, infectious, evil disease that’s going to spread throughout the world. So he said to his people that we are going to fight the evil and save the world, more specifically England. This made the crowd go wild because who doesn’t want to be the superhero? While Churchill was a little more subtle and clear, he made it clear that Germany was the devil and they had to protect themselves. Even though Goebbels used a lot of false statements and Churchill did not, they both had a tremendous effect on the people. This is because they both knew they had to do anything to gain and retain the power they had to try and win the war.

Machiavelli and Thoreau

In the world, people have different views about each other all the time. Some say that people are lazy; some say people are compliant, and others say people are safe. Henry David Thoreau and Niccolo Machiavelli also have two different views on the masses. In “Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau and The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli seem to be passionate about their point of view on government, but they also seem to have two different distinct views on the masses of the people.

A person who’s focused on major change is worried about the “masses.” This is because most of the time majority rules, and that’s how things get done. However, to gain support a person has to appeal to the masses, and this is done by understanding the majority. This is exactly what Machiavelli and Thoreau did when they were talking about their ideologies. They both made generalizations about the people, and both of their generalizations seem to be correct, despite the fact that they were different. I say that they both seem to be correct because they inspired people who changed the course of history. Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience” inspired Ghandi, Mandela, and Martin Luther King Jr. But Napolean, Mussolini, and Hitler seemed to be inspired by Machiavelli’s The Prince. These people had major impacts on the world, and to be successful they had to take the generalizations about the masses that were made by Machiavelli and Thoreau and apply it to their purpose.

Even though both of their generalizations seem to be correct, they were completely different. Thoreau and Machiavelli both had strong opinions about the masses that either worked against the majority or worked in favor of the majority. Thoreau believed that the masses could be a strong and influential force. He didn’t explicitly say this; however, it was implied because he believed that if a person were to put their whole life into a cause there could possibly be a change. Whereas Machiavelli believed that the masses had no power because he saw them as feeble and weak. He felt that the masses take everything for face value and that’s one of the reasons why a tyrant can hold their position.
I don’t know how true these ideas about the masses are, but I do know that they’re true to a certain extent. Everyone is different and everyone has a different way of thinking. However, if these ideas on the masses aren’t correct they wouldn’t have worked in favor of the major figures in history so well.

Argument of Proposal

In CGS, students host other students from different countries. The students of CGS invite the foreign language students into their homes to show them the life of an average American. This may sound exciting to the exchange students; however, it can also be uncomfortable and sometimes even a scary thought that they’re going to be living with a new family for a week. As the school hosting the foreign language students we should try to make them feel a sense of safety going into the host student’s home.

To increase the level of security for the foreign language students, CGS should do background checks on the host’s home and family members. These background checks would not be a FBI like background check. This is to make sure that any of the host’s family members that are living in the house do not have a record with the authorities, and if they do, to make sure that it’s nothing along the lines of assault and abuse. The background check would also include an individual that CGS hires or an employee of CGS to go the host family’s home to make sure it’s suitable to house another child. When I say this I mean that the home has enough room to house another child and to make sure that there’s nothing in the house that may harm the child. These background checks will not only make the foreign language students feel comfortable, but their parents also.

Even though these background checks will probably cost GGS more money, it’s worth it. A child’s security should be our top priority, especially if they’re from a foreign country. We don’t want them to America, some of them for their first time, and have their trip ruined because they felt unsafe and uncomfortable. No one wants to go to a new place and feel uncomfortable and unsafe, everyone deserves a sense of security, especially coming to a new country and living with new people for a week. Even though I haven’t personally heard instances where a foreign language student complains about how he/she feels uncomfortable in a person’s home the background checks should be done as a safety precaution and as a courtesy towards our guest.

Toulmin Analysis on Appyling Ethos Blog

In one of my previous blogs I expanded upon the idea of CGS families receiving background checks; which is my claim. The reason I chose this social change project is because I feel like the students we’re hosting should have a sense of security and comfort coming into our homes. I did mention a qualifier in my last blog and it’s that the background checks are limited to the families that decide to host a student from another country. It would be unnecessary and an invasion of privacy if every family received a background check; not every student in CGS is going to host a student.

In my blog my warrants are explicit statements, and it’s that students should and want to be safe when entering a new person’s home for the first time. There parent’s should also feel like their child is entering a safe environment. I did include a backing, which is very logical, however, I think it was lacking in evidence. My backing is that many homes do not have enough room to house another student or sometimes family members could be verbally, physically, mentally, and emotionally abusive. I lacked in evidence when I stated this because I never heard of a student being hosted complaining about any such thing. I think I should’ve added a qualifier in my evidence stating that it’s just a precaution, and that such incidents haven’t occurred that we know about.
One thing I didn’t include in my previous blog is the conditions of rebuttal. If I were to include this, the conditions of rebuttal would be that some people feel like there is not a need for the background checks because they cost extra money and time, and that the families and homes of CGS students are great to host a student. That’s a nice thing to believe about the families of CGS, but we are never entirely sure because this is reality. Safety and comfort for the students we’re hosting should be our top priority; it shouldn’t be downplayed because it costs CGS extra time and money. If CGS is about expanding our ideas of the world, then it should be done safely.

Social Change Project: Audience

Top Seven
·       Mrs. McCarthy
·       Mrs. Cawley
·       CGS teachers
·       Board of Education
·       Brien McMahon teachers
·       Brien McMahon administration
·       Norwalk City Hall
Top Three
·       Mrs. McCarthy
Mrs. McCarthy is one of my top choices because she’s the director of CGS. She oversees all the teachers and other employees, and makes the final decisions about the study tours.
·       Mrs. Cawley
She’s Mrs. McCarthy right hand man. She’s more detailed orientated, and makes sure that all the students are handing in their paperwork for the study tours. She can make sure that background checks are being performed properly and at the right time.
·       Board of Education
The Board of Education can approve of these background checks. Their opinion can posses a lot of weight on whether or not the background checks should be performed. And if they really like the idea they can tell Mrs. McCarthy to do the background checks.
I choose the Board of Education because they can enforce the idea if they like it or totally sabotage it. However, I’m willing to take that risk.

Applying ethos: CGS Background Checks

In CGS we house students from our sisters schools from all over the world. The students we usually host are students that are native speakers to the language we’re learning. Many of these students have different religions than we do; some are Muslim, Buddhist, Christian, etc. Often the time they do come to our homes they are nervous and scared. The reason for this is because they’re in a new environment with people they don’t know. The principle of our school wants them to feel comforted and welcomed but how are we going to know that if we don’t if the host’s family and home isn't safe. To ensure this safety for our guests, the host’s family needs a background check. This is to ensure that the home is safe and that the family are nice wholesome people to take in another student. In CGS many of the teachers like to believe that every student has nice families and homes good enough to host another student. But sometimes that isn’t the case.  There could be a possibility that there are some actions within a home that could offend the guest. Or the house could not be fit enough for a child to be hosted. As a student of CGS I know that hosting a student is tough because that student could be very shy and speak very little. The principle most likely knows this too, so to ensure the guests safety and comfort a background check should be issued. If I were going to another country to live with someone else’s family I would like for them to get a background check. I would like to reassure my parents that it’s safe, and also reassure myself that it’s safe as well. Who wouldn’t want to be in house that’s safe and comfortable? No one I know of, so why not give the background checks? Another safety precaution for our guests can’t do any harm.

Applying Pathos: CGS Background Checks

CGS is a homey place; a place where many kids come to learn three exotic languages in the world and express themselves without any judgment. We often invite students from these exotic places and let them stay in our homes and see what it’s like to live the “American” lifestyle. CGS students also go to the countries that speak the language that they’re learning. Wouldn’t you want to go to these new places and experience the culture? Wouldn’t you want to give the students from these countries a chance to learn the life of an average American and let them create their own impressions? What a great, comfortable, safe, and culturally diverse school CGS is. But CGS is missing one safe thing and that’s getting background checks on the families that are hosting. As a student from another country I would like to know if the family that I’m staying with is safe. I wish CGS would try and ask permission from the host family if they would like to do a background check. It would reassure the students’ safety and reassure them that no harm would come to them and they would get assigned a family that best suits them. As a person who can be become quickly uncomfortable when around the unfamiliar, I know that feeling of not knowing what you’re stepping into. It’s a scary thing not only for the students that are coming from these countries, but also their parents. Think about how your parents would feel if they were sending you to another country to live with a new family for a week without knowing what the family is about. It’s a scary thing to imagine. It’s like walking through a dark room not knowing what’s there until you hit that light switch on the other side of the room. It’s scary and as CGS, the culturally diverse, homey, safe school why would we want our home stays to feel that way?

My Sentence Level Imitation on Unpaved Roads

I especially like Joan, the svelte fortyish hostess, who turns out to be a militant feminist, pulling me aside one day to explain that “men run everything-we don’t have a chance unless we stick together.” Accordingly, she backs me up when I get overpowered on the floor, and in return I give her a chunk of my tips or stand guard while she sneaks off for an unauthorized cigarette break. We all admire her for standing up to Billy and telling him, after some of his usual nastiness about the female server class, to “shut the fuck up.” I even warm up to Billy when, on a slow night and to make up for a particularly unwarranted attack on my abilities, or so I imagine, he tells me about his glory days as a young man at “coronary school” in Brooklyn, where he dated a knockout Puerto Rican chick-or do you say “culinary”(Ehrenreich 21)?

Pave the roads please, it’s really hard to drive, and it shakes me to death, every time I go over a pothole I say “my mom’s tire-please don’t let something happen to it again.” Usually, the roads will get repaved every spring, but that hasn’t been the case for the past couple of years on my street because now we have potholes all over the place causing tire damage. It takes a lot of money to get a tire replaced now a day, so why can’t the city of Bridgeport accommodate us and say, “making BPT a better place.” If everything goes back on track, then my parents and my neighbors wouldn’t have to worry about their pockets and tires so much, making life easier for them however, I wonder why they stopped paving our roads anyway is it to “save money” if so, then they need to figure something out-or can they really “figure” this out?

Something Fierce; A Story about Kaela Patricia

One thing that bugs me is when a person has to write down my name and doesn’t ask me how to spell it. Why assume and end up making an ass out of u and me? Get it ASS-U-ME? I know this may seem like irrelevant information, but it’s very relevant because my name is Kaela, pronounced as Kay-la. I hate it when people have to write down my name and don’t ask me how to spell it. It’s MY name, not yours so why are you trying to spell it like it’s yours. It’s what’s on my birth certificate and how I identify myself. Why not give me the courtesy on asking me how to spell my name.

I know what you’re saying. Why make a big deal on someone spelling your name wrong? It’s because my name is special. I’m named after my dad, his middle name is Kaylin, but my brother is the one who decided to spell it K-A-E-L-A. He passed when I was young and I didn’t know him well, so this is how I like to honor him. I also feel like my name reflects me, strong and unique. Yes, I think the way my name is spelled is strong and it’s because the “e” makes it look uniform and the “y” in Kayla makes it look really feminine and weak. No offense to the Kayla’s with a “y”.

Kaela. It’s great right? It has many origins and meanings. Some of these origins are Arabian, Irish, and even Greek. The meanings behind my lovely name are laurel crown, which was used to represent victory and triumph in ancient Greece, slim, fair, and my favorite beloved. All these meanings represent me, which is quite interesting that my name reflects my personality; it’s not every day that this happens. I guess I have my parents and my brother to thank for that.
A name that many don’t know is my middle name, Patricia. This name has a long history and has been in my family before; I was just so honored to receive it. This name was the name of one of my older sister’s imaginary friends. Yes you read it correctly, imaginary friend. And I know you’re probably thinking that my older sister has an imaginary friend? Well she did when she was like 10 or something along those lines. I love it! It’s not what someone who really knows me expects. I’m really quiet but when I start talking it’s a string of something fierce and powerful and in your mind you’re say, “She doesn’t seem like a Patricia.” I like that touch of unexpected with my middle name because my first name is totally me, no question.
